Before my brother arrived, I managed to sneak in a day of diving at Nusa Penida, an island all off the eastern coast of Bali. The first dive was at a site called Manta Point, but sadly I couldn’t cross diving with Manta Rays off my life list just yet. They didn’t show! Such jerks.
But the second dive was at a site called Toyapakeh, and my disappointment with the mantas vanished the second we headed down. Intricate coral formations, including the biggest bed of staghorn coral I’ve ever seen, stretched out below us, all of it teeming with life. Check out this quick video of some of the highlights, with appearances by an elusive octopus, a scuttling shrimp, clownfish playing in an anemone (Nemo!), a bunch of blue-spotted stingrays, and one mean-ass stonefish.
